We Did Camp

So, things don’t always turn out as you plan.

It was the day for me and our two grown daughters to go camping. Greg called home before we left to tell me we needed to go to the emergency room because he was having chest pain. That was horrifying! After many tests and an overnight stay in the hospital we learned that the cause was a medication side effect.

We had to cancel our campsite arrangements, and we did so without a second thought. We were scared!

With much relief, the day Greg got out of the hospital around 1 pm, the girls and I decided our fun was not going to be cancelled after all. We set up the tent, sleeping bags, cooler, and firepit, to camp in our backyard.

In the tent we opened a sleeping bag so we could all lie on it. Over that, we laid a great big blanket where we could all sleep together under it. The heat was in the 90’s and we rested inside the house for a couple hours until it began to cool down a little. That would be called glamping, or glamour camping.

That night I made nachos and s’mores on the grill. The nachos tasted like smoke, but the s’mores were delicious! We ended the night by telling not so scary stories in the tent.  We were asleep by 10pm.

The next day after waking up bright and early, we laid there for the longest time snacking, talking, and mostly laughing.

It was super hot, and our tent was in full sun, although it was supposed to be in the shade where we had reservations. We again, did sneak into the house for a few hours to enjoy the air conditioning. But that day is when the real fun started.

When it cooled down a bit, we invited Greg to our “campsite.” He came for dinner. Kylie made the fire, and dinner of pizza sandwiches, spaghetti sauce and mozzarella cheese on bread, made like a grilled cheese sandwich. Man, they were good. Then we had s’mores. YUM! We talked, and laughed, and sang along as we listened to music for hours. Then in the dark, Greg told old scary stories we heard as kids. It was so funny, the kids knew them, but they heard them with a different twist when they were kids. That evening was GREAT!

But I have saved the best for last.

In the morning before getting up, I was facing Kylie and she opened her eyes a tiny bit and moved toward me. We were forehead to forehead, holding hands under the covers. We have held hands under the covers when going to sleep since she was little. We slept that way for a while.

I woke up and laid there looking at her sweet face for the longest time. My heart swelled with love. When I went into the house later, I had to cry a little. I feel like the most blessed mom in the world. Oh, my grown girls will always be my babies. To know they love me like I love them is the greatest, most precious gift.

There is always a way to make lemonade out of lemons. Although we cannot always see it at the time, a little bit of good can be found in almost anything. Sometimes you just need to look really hard for it.
