Take the confusion out of taking medications

So many of us take medications, and they can be hard to keep track of. Let us start by having a pill organizer with compartments needed to store the medications. Because filling them is a difficult task for me to keep track of for Veronica and me, and I have mastered it, I am going to share my solution with you.

  • Make it a routine.
  • Fill your case in the

1. Same place

2. Same time

3.  Same day of the week each week.

  • Write a reminder for filling your pill case.
  • In your calendar or
  • On your phone so you can remember when to do it.
  • Keep the bottles in a Ziploc bag with your name on it in permanent marker.

Ours are kept in a lockbox.

  • Put a piece of masking tape on top of each bottle lid with the name of the medicine written on it. That helps make medicine easier to identify.

Still read labels on pill bottles.

  • Do not put all your pills that are to be taken at different times throughout the day in one compartment of the pill case. They must be stored separately, or you might mix up which pill gets taken when.
  • Put your weekly pill organizer in a safe place, somewhere you will remember to look.
  • Count your pills after filling your case. Know how many pills you are supposed to take. I put a note on our kitchen cabinet, so I do not forget. For example:

Morning – 3 pills

Noon-3 pills

Night- 1 pill

  • On the back of the pill case, tape a list of your medications and doses you take.

 List should include:

  1. Current date
  2. Name of the doctor’s office
  3. Doctor’s name
  4. Clinic phone number
  • Update the list whenever there is a change in the medication or dose.
  • To Remember to take them
  • Write yourself a note or
  • Put an alarm on your phone
  • All adults in the family should keep a list of each other’s medications/doses in their wallet in case of emergency. I came up with this after finding out when I was in the hospital after my brain injury that my husband did not know what medicines I was taking.

If you would like to know more about how we handle our lives post brain injuries, please read my book titled,
